{Upcycled Vintage}: Children's Books Challenge!

Here's your first challenge!  I was going to wait until Tuesday, but I was so excited about it that I finished my projects, took some pics and here you go!  I have several vintage children's books in my closet, and here are a few I have picked up lately. So, with that, I decided to make a pretty bookmark for a friend (an Easter themed one at that), and then I used the Bullwinkle book to make a scrapbook page of my "moose," my big boy (man) in his football uniform.  I liked how the words on the Bullwinkle page fit Brady too, "big, funny feet," and he loves to eat.  Haha!  This book was copyright 1962 and the price was 29 cents then.  The other book was copyright 1968 and was part of a series of Sunny Books.
Here they are!

The bookmark is the page layered in vellum, with ribbon gathered and a rose embellishment.  I looped the ribbon through a vintage button on the front of the card.

I used a vintage dictionary page and some other papers in my stash that I had to layer this one.  I love it!  Do you know how long it has been since I scrapbooked?  Forever!

Anyway, show me what you did!  You have the week to link up.  I can't wait to see!  If you want to sponsor one of my challenges, let me know!

{Upcycled Vintage} Challenge, Link, and Win!

 (weheartit)
Isn't that the cutest picture?  My two loves, cats and birdies.

I would like to challenge myself to start finding ways to display, use, upcycle, and share my vintage paper that I have been collecting over the past few years at estates and thrift shops, so how about some projects and a linky party?  This will be a weekly challenge and the link party will be open for one week after it is posted for you to link up and share.  We will start the challenge each Tuesday.  Here is where you come in!

1.  Go through your vintage and/or shop thrift shops or estates and display, make use of,  or share a project that goes with the theme for that week.
2.  Link up so we can all see what you did!
3.  When the link closes, we will choose a winner at random!

Now, if you would like to sponsor a giveaway for one of the challenges, you will be given an exclusive (free) spot for your button at the top right of my sidebar for that week and an exclusive {hello, Dear!} post featuring your blog and/or shop, and your challenge creation if you play along.  Email me at feedthebirdies(at)gmail(dot)com
for details!

Stay tuned tomorrow!!  And a little hint:  our first challenge will include vintage children's books!!  Come play along!

{Where'd She Go?} 1960s Dallas Glam Estate

Close your eyes, remove the tables of belongings that are tagged for sale, and dream with me. Today was a great day for 1960s inspiration; glamorous inspiration. The house I traveled to in "old money" Dallas was one of the best I've seen in a long time. I wasn't focused on the contents for sale, but the house itself. I would pack up my three orange suitcases and move right in.

The house was not the most alluring home on the block (although beautiful trees and an impressive lot with a view); but the architecture and lines from the outside gave me a hint of what would be presented grandly on the inside. And it was. I walked in, exclaimed, "This house is unbelievable!", mouth wide open, and the ladies heading the sale replied, "It's fabulous. Just keep walking." I did. Eyes up high, not really noticing what treasures from it's past owners were up for trade... "They are tearing it down." What? NO. They can't. It's in a flood plain. *sigh*

Those are furs on the clothes rack by the glass.

My head was up the whole time, in awe of vaulted ceilings and walls that didn't block, only divided the rooms into different spaces. The floor was wide open, and the entire back wall of the house was GLASS. Unreal. Striking view. I envision what the people who lived there lived like.  They must have been wonderful entertainers; the wine goblets and eclectic mix of fondue pots and serving dishes were plenty. I can hear the lady of the home's kitten heels clicking on the parquet flooring that has faded where rugs lay.

You step up into the bedrooms, and down into a basement (it was closed off); the wallpaper made me laugh out loud and sent me searching for more.

Only minimal division between rooms...

The two living areas were definitively set apart;
one for family, one for guests.

Glass...all over...glass...and a gorgeous view.

See the poker table?

Her cookbooks. I'm sure that her guests were fed well and recipes were shared. The only thing I carried home from the sale was the Joy of Cooking from 1964.

A pretty picture window in the kitchen to watch guests arrive for the evening.

Once in the dressing room and closet that could have doubled as a small apartment, I wanted to throw on a feather boa and a little black dress, carry a sequined clutch, and welcome guests through the double carved wooden doors and into the plush social gathering that once echoed friendship, and men in black ties held martinis and introduced their wives. Don't you hear Frank Sinatra in the background?

I lost myself in this place. And they are tearing it down. So long, dream home, so long.

(One entry for each.)

Each ad will be 200X100 and will be just $5 for the month of March as an introductory special!  If you would like to sponsor FTB, just email your button at feedthebirdies(at)gmail(dot)com.  Thanks so much for being a part of all of this flighty little blog!

1, 2, 3 o'clock, 4 o'clock rock!

That's what I'll be doing in my estate find of the weekend. The lady of the estate is 80, and it was her father's. We found it nestled in the grandbabies' room, waiting for us to adopt. Vintage rocker, $37.50. It's a little stinky so it will get a sun bath and a good steam clean, but other than that, it's perfect. I have a new place to curl up with a good book. Did you find anything out thrifting in pretty weather this weekend?

pretty weather + Miata = sunshine + fresh air

The mister and I had a date weekend.  The little birdies went to Gram's house.  And I painted my nails...for like the first time since our wedding almost six years ago...and black, too.

Jeans and fun sandals...with black toenails...in the window of the Miata....

This cute boy driving us around town....

Enjoying some sunshine...the first sunburn of the season in the Miata...it's the best...

Love Week

This week at school is Love Week. We sponsor one family or student that is struggling with life's circumstances and we celebrate their strength and let them know we are behind them all the way. The entire district is involved and we all participate in activities and fundraisers to raise money and awareness for their cause. This year it is for a little kindergarten boy with leukemia. There are t-shirts, dress up days, buttons, newscasts, activities, and lots of love and thought put into the whole week. Here I am with my bestie, Mel, on "I love my best friend!" dress up day.

We love Love Week!

It's also been a "love"ly week at home too. I made an early V-Day breakfast for my bunch...

Banana pancakes from (sort of) scratch with fresh strawberries and bananas. Yum! I'll post the recipe for you. Then William got Kate and I some stuffed love with candy...

An owl for me and a puppy for Kate. Bo got a Tech Deck mini skateboard and candy from his favorite girl....his momma! Haha! I made a heart out of wedding and engagement pics on our bathroom mirror for my man, and he wrote me a poem the next morning. *love*

"roses are red; violets are blue; this marker is niether but I still love you!" I told you he is witty!!

And we also helped at the school winter formal this past weekend with my PALs kids. Katie liked the wax lips.

It's been quite the large red-hearted time! I love you guys for reading and being a part of Feed the Birdies...Happy Love Week!!

How Feed the Birdies flew in....

Once upon a time two little boys ate Happy Meals in the middle seat of a Ford minivan. Not quite willing to eat the last few fries, they launched them out the door screaming, "feed the birdies!!" And so my journal of a road through motherhood and wifedom, with a little bit of crafting on the side...where everybirdy gets a french fry. And we're all happy about it.
